Conference on The Roman Baths

We are delighted to invite you on Saturday, December, 6th 2025 at 2:30 p.m., free admission, for a conference on “The Baths in Roman Antiquity: Hygienic Principles and Sociability, What Evidence in Corsica?” by Ophélie de Peretti, archaeologist specializing in Antiquity and director of the Mariana Museum, member of UMR 6566 - CreAAH

An emblematic building of Roman culture and heir to the Greek world, the bath was dedicated not only to body care and hygiene, but also to recreational and sporting practices. Public baths were essential places of sociability. In towns as well as in the countryside, in both public and private settings, these establishments were strong markers of Roman identity. They could take the form of vast complexes, such as those built during the High Empire, or be reduced to a few rooms within Roman houses. This conference sheds light on the Roman practice of bathing by focusing on major public bath complexes and offers an overview of bath buildings and bathing instruments in Roman Corsica.
