Conference on The first cathedrals of Corsica (5th-6th century)

We are delighted to invite you on Saturday, May 24th, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. for a conference on "The first cathedrals of Corsica (5th-6th century)" led by Daniel Istria, Research Director, archaeologist, Cnrs LA3M UMR7298

With the spread of Christianity during late antiquity and the first centuries of the Middle Ages, a new type of building appears: the cathedral. This church, which houses the bishop's seat or the cathedral, then constitutes a monumental pole and a center of power of primary importance. Around the 600s Corsica had four. Where are they located and why? When, how and by whom are they built? What do the plans, liturgical arrangements and decorations of these buildings teach us about the personality of bishops, their role in island society and their relations with the outside world? Daniel Istria will present his recent research on these issues and draw up an overview of the first cathedrals built in Corsica.
