Conference on Vincentello d'Istria

We are delighted to invite you on Saturday, Aprill 12th, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. for a conference on "Vincentello and the Crown of Aragon" led by Philippe Colombani, PhD in Medieval History (University of Corsica).

Vincentello d'Istria is one of the few figures from medieval Corsica who has a statue honoring his memory in 21st-century Corsica. He lived in the 15th century and was an important lord of the island, admired and feared by his contemporaries, to the point of being granted the title of Count of Corsica, a title reserved for those who managed to establish themselves as the supreme lord of the entire island. But his destiny is not limited to our shores alone; he was also a significant player in the Mediterranean geopolitics of his time, a loyal ally of the King of Aragon, the most powerful Christian kingdom in the Mediterranean. But what reality does this portrait correspond to? What does it mean to be a Corsican lord in the 15th century? On what foundation does he build his power and dreams of supremacy? What is this island society he claims to rule over? And what role does the King of Aragon, ruler of distant lands, play in this story, to whom Vincentello has tied his destiny and ambitions? These are some of the questions we will try to answer in this lecture. Not far from Canonica cathedral, where the Counts of Corsica gathered their supporters, and from Biguglia, where he won his most glorious victory, we will share the breath of his epic journey.
