Conference on Francesco Rivarola

We are delighted to invite you on Saturday, June, 6 at 2:30 p.m., free admission, for a conference on “Francesco Rivarola : between loyalties, military commitment, and Corsican consciousness in the 19th century”, by Eugène Gherardi, university professor (Università di Corsica P. Paoli), director of the CNRS UMR 6240 LISA.

An exceptional lecture based on his work "Casa Rivarola", published by Alain Piazzola in 2023, Eugène Gherardi will present the figure of Francesco Rivarola (1779–1853), through whom we will delve into the turbulent history of Corsica and the Mediterranean during the 19th century.

Born in a Bastia family rooted in Oletta and Omessa, and connected to military, diplomatic, and religious circles, Francesco Rivarola appears as one of the heirs of a generation deeply marked by the Paolist experience and the geopolitical upheavals of the 18th century.

At the crossroads of Corsican, Genoese, Sardinian, and British loyalties, his journey sheds light on the political reconfigurations of a Mediterranean space shaped by imperial rivalries, national aspirations, and the circulation of people, ideas, and political models. Through family archives, correspondence, and memoirs, this lecture also seeks to restore the human and novelistic depth of the Casa Rivarola, a family that played a lasting role in shaping the Corsican historical imagination.
