Conference on Dies Palmarum

We are pleased to invite you on Saturday, March 28 at 2:30 PM, free entry, Conference on "Dies Palmarum: the palm tree in Mediterranean religious traditions" by Robert Castellana, sociologist

As part of the celebration of Palm Sunday, the Dies Palmarum that opens Holy Week, we welcome Robert Castellana, sociologist and coordinator of the Phoenix Project. He will present an overview of the tradition of woven palms in the Mediterranean world. This tradition of palm weaving, still very much alive in our region, and is part of ancient Christian liturgical practices that spread across the Mediterranean basin and even beyond. This lecture will address the history of palm domestication, its place in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern civilizations, and the popular traditions of Holy Week with the rich craft of palm weaving that takes place on this occasion.
The main Eastern and European traditions will be presented in this context: Coptic traditions of Egypt and Ethiopia, Greek Orthodox, Italian, Corsican, Sardinian, and Spanish.
